Baseball Caps

Baseball Caps (aka Baseball Hats, Snapbacks, Lids) were first discovered in 1954 by New Era Caps, who introduced their standard issue cap known as the 59 Fifty Baseball Cap. This brought uniformity to the Baseball game and fifty years on, it’s still flying the Major League Baseball flag as their official Baseball Caps supplier.  In the late 70s and early 80s the American public became interested in wearing the Baseball Caps worn by their favourite team and the big stars. The trend took hold and the Snapback Baseball Cap eventually made its way into every part of American society, including Hollywood and most importantly, the music scene.

Baseball Caps — Histroy

In '94, Spike Lee the New York film maker asked New Era to make him a fitted New York Yankees Cap in 'unofficial' colours. At first the brand thought it was a strange request – who’d want a cap that's not identical to the Pros? But Spike got what he wanted, people noticed, and demand for the hats grew making Spike Lee the founder of the Fitted Baseball CapFitted baseball caps, like Flexfit Caps, are designed to fit a particular head size so lacked an adjuster.  The cap is normally sewn in six panel six sections, and may be topped with a matching fabric-covered button on the crown.

Baseball Caps — Evolution

In the UK the last 4 years has seen extraordinary growth through MTV, artists like Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst helped introduce the UK to the New York Yankees Baseball Cap. This was around the time when the British public were keen to show their solidarity with New York after the 9/11 tragedy.  Baseball Caps continue to grow in popularity and the music industry retains its influence over what’s popular.  Usher is currently doing his bit for the Atlanta Braves Baseball Cap. Typically, the brim was much shorter in the earlier days of the Baseball Hat, which has been reintroduce by Brixton Hats recently. 5-Panel Caps have also seen a resurgence in the last couple of years and are staples for the likes of Supreme, Norse Projects, Huff. The latest trend in Baseball Caps is the Snapback Cap or Snapbacks as they are more commonly known, where they have an adjustable fastening so that it can be quickly adjusted to fit different wearers.
