Original Penguin Clothing evolved in 1955. Actually there is a bit of a story behind the Original Penguin brand, it was on a sales errand to New York in '55, when Abbot Pederson found himself with time to kill before flying home. He decided to kill the time in a local bar. During the flight, Pederson's eagerness got the better of him and Pete the Penguin's head was severed off. A rather attractive air stewardess whose attention Pederson had been appreciating on board gently removed his tie, and swapped it for the neck of the penguin. In doing so, she joked that such a lucky, dapper bird surely deserved to be immortalised - possibly even embroidered on a similar shirt to the one Pederson was sporting. Little did she know... On his return to Minneapolis, Pederson, a keen golfer, wasted no time. The Penguin by Munsingwear shirt was born. Even back in '55 it was ahead of its time, comfortable, casual making it equally at home on the 18th hole or the club house. Known today simply as "the 55," it was to become the foundation of an entire fashion trend.

Penguin became almost instantly synonymous with the era's most iconic and courted celebrities: Clint Eastwood, Frank Sinatra, Arnold Palmer, Dean Martin and Richard Nixon making Original Penguin a true American classic fashion label. As a testament to the timeless appeal of the Original Penguin clothing classic designs, the shirts launched back into fashion starting at the turn of the century. By 2003, the vast new audience led to the rebirth of an Original Penguin by Munsingwear.
